MONTINI CATHOLIC TAKES BRAIN SAFETY HEAD ON

WITH NEW PROGRAM FOR ALL STUDENTS

Chicago, IL, June 15, 2016 – Montini Catholic High School, renowned for its winning athletic program, has made a move to ensure that all of its students receive year-round concussion screening, testing and care. The school is the first in Illinois to offer concussion management tools and resources for the entire student body, not just athletes. These services are provided exclusively by SportsBrain, LLC, a healthcare company that works with athletes, students and military personnel.

“We want to be ahead of the game in providing concussion management services for all of our students, not just athletes,” explains Tom Lentine, Montini Catholic Athletic Director. “Our coaches are happy that SportsBrain will give us top-notch concussion care and our administration is pleased to have a fully comprehensive return-to-learn protocol. Partnering with SportsBrain will not only keep kids healthy, but return them to the classroom safely.”

“We applaud Montini for taking care of all of its students,” explains Kristine Gross, SportsBrain CEO. “Concussions are just as likely to happen in sports as they are in everyday life, such as in a bike accident on the way to school. With our cloud-based technology, we can track students’ compliance with our neurocognitive baseline concussion test, education quiz, concussion incident reporting (mobile app) and return-to-learn clearance from a medical professional. Our goal is to deliver an affordable brain safety solution for all students.”

In most cases, with proper diagnosis and treatment, concussion is a treatable condition and full recovery can be expected. However, second impact syndrome (SIS) is a result of an acute, often fatal brain swelling that occurs when a second concussion is sustained before complete recovery from a previous concussion. The risk of second impact syndrome is highest among children 18 and younger as their brains are still developing. The highest incidence of SIS is found in sports such as boxing, football, ice hockey, soccer, lacrosse, basketball and skiing. The CDC reports an average of 1.5 deaths per year from sports concussions. In most of these cases, a concussion, usually undiagnosed, had occurred prior to the final one.
